Summer
2006
Do
your surroundings have you feeling like you
are in the dark? It is a very delicate
balance to achieve the right lighting to
create the mood, while enabling the
functionality that you need.
According to James Benya Lighting
Design Basics (Wiley and Sons,
2004) there are several “layers” of
lighting:
Ambient layer –
This is overall or uniform lighting. Often
we use recessed or indirect lighting to
achieve this layer.
Task layer –
This is horizontal work surface lighting for
areas such as desks or counter tops.
Downlighting is generally most effectively
used to support the task layer.
Focal, or Display
layer – This is accent lighting to
illuminate features, displays and focal
points. Here track lighting or spotlight
recessed lights can be exceptionally
helpful.
Decorative, or
Traditional layer – This is the
jewelry of lighting. Where any decorative
luminary goes, because you love it and know
that the surrounding won’t be complete
without it.
In
Redesign, we take all of these layers into
account when placing your lighting so that
the result is one that gives you
beauty, function and
most of all, light.
